How to Use the Widget

!! IMPORTANT !!

The first step to EspritLMS enabling your ToolBook project is ALWAYS adding the EspritLMS Shared Actions and Global Variables. Do this by adding the EspritLMS Shared Actions Widget to the first page of your book. This will be described in more detail in the following steps.

You can always get additional help with the EspritLMS Widgets by selecting them and then selecting CNTL-F1. This will bring up the ToolBook Coach which will provide specific instructions on using any of the Widgets.

Remember to save your book frequently as you add EspritLMS Widgets to your project :-)

1.

Add the EspritLMS Shared Actions Widget to your book. This Widget can be added to any page in your book, typically you would add this to your first page. When you add the Widget, let it "do it's thing." When it is done, you will get a message, "Shared Actions and Global Variables have been assigned! This object will now be removed." That's all there is to it :-) It will actually do as it says and will be removed.

There will be no change in the functionality of your book at this stage as this process creates all of the EspritLMS Shared Actions that are executed by the other EspritLMS Widgets. It also creates and assigns default values to all of the EspritLMS global variables. For a complete list of the Shared Actions and the global variables click here.

2.

Add Exit/BookMark Widget to your book. Typically you would add this Widget to the background which would make this functionality available to every page on the background, you can also add the Widget to any page. When you add the Widget, it will actually add a group that includes a button and a recordField or Field, a recordField will be added if on the background and a Field if added to a page. The button will  Post a bookmark to EspritLMS and/or Exit and this is via Actions in the button. The recordField or Field will only show in author mode and is used to hold the actual data being passed to EspritLMS.

Extended Properties for the Exit/Bookmark Group Once you add the Exit/Bookmark Widget to your book you will notice that it has extended properties. With the group selected you can select the extended properties editor and you can specify the purpose of the button: Bookmark, Exit or both Bookmark and Exit.

The most typical option is to Bookmark the page that the learner is currently on and then Exit the program. But, the choice is yours!

HINT: If you already have Exit buttons in your project that you will be replacing, we suggest that you add the EspritLMS Exit/Bookmark Widget to all of the backgrounds and/or pages you wish to have that functionality BEFORE you remove the existing Exit buttons. Then, run through the book manually in author mode to assure that you have the EspritLMS Exit button on all of the necessary pages. Once you are happy that the Widget is properly added to all of the necessary pages, remove the old Exit buttons and put the New Exit buttons in their place. You can customize the button in this widget to fit with the theme of your project following the guidelines in Customizing EspritLMS Objects.

Note that you only need to do this once (i.e. the first time you add the Widget). Thereafter you can copy the Widget from the background (or page) and paste it – ensuring that it will appear in the same location throughout your book.

3.

Add a Score Button Widget to your book ONLY IF there is a quiz in the book. Typically this button will go on the score page. It is important to note that this button scores the book and posts the score to EspritLMS, it is the raw score only and not a percentage.

To display the score on the page, add a standard ToolBook "Score Field" object from the standard ToolBook catalog Scoring and Tracking catalog category or just add a field and name it Score. If you do not add a field to display the score then the score will be displayed in a popup, just like tool tips.

If the book does not have quiz then do not add this Widget.

4.

Add a Previous Score Group Widget to your book ONLY IF there is a quiz in the book and you wish to display the previous score. Typically you would place this Widget on your score page. However, it can be added to any page in your book.

5.

Save your book and now give it a whirl! Hit F3 and go into reader mode. You will be able to test the Exit and Scoring functions natively. You will only be able to test the Bookmark and Previous Score functions when you export the book and run it through EspritLMS.

If experience and problems please consult the Troubleshooting Guide.
