The EspritLMS Story

EspritLMS was originally developed for Resource Engineering to manage and deliver the company's off-the-shelf web-based training.  Before undertaking this major effort, we looked at dozens of commercially available LMSs and didn't like what we found:  Systems starting at $100,000, LMSs that would require us to use a proprietary authoring system, little control over how the LMS would work, and an industry in the flux with major players merging, consolidating, and going out of business everyday.  If web-based training was going to be the basis of our business, we needed a product that we knew would:

  • Be around for the long term.
  • Keep up-to-date with new technology, customer requirements, and acceptable industry practices.
  • Build on the existing investment we had already made in ToolBook.

At the time we had no intention of turning the LMS into a commercially viable product.  However, we have talked to enough ToolBook Developers to know that the LMS is often a huge barrier to delivering web-based training.  It is the chicken and egg type of situation...How do you justify investing a substantial amount of money into an LMS if you don't know if the market is there and how do you know if the market is there if you can't deliver your training? 

Sure, we are good guys and want to help out fellow ToolBookers.  In fact, we have some pricing options that will allow you to try us out without breaking the bank.  But, there is a selfish reason for us doing this...we plan to continually enhance and improve our LMS and to do that takes funding.  That's where customers come in :-)  Our goal isn't to have hundreds of customers.  Instead we are seeking a handful of customers whose needs fit with our goals for the LMS.  It is a Win-Win!  Our customers get an affordable LMS, everyone using the LMS gets ongoing enhancements, and we get the funding for the ongoing development work. 

On June 1, 2003 we brought our first LMS customer on board.  The company is FieldCentrix who had been using Click2Learn's pre-Aspen LMS, which was going to be discontinued.  Vickey Walston, the manager of e-learning considered many different options and took a chance on us.  Here is why Vickey was willing to give us a shot:

  • We were able to get her ToolBook courses up and running and communicating to the LMS to demonstrate that it works!  This might sound obvious, but no other providers were able to do this for her!
  • There were some features that she needed that we did not offer.  As an example - one required feature was launching and tracking pdf's, word documents, and camtasia videos.  No problem!  In fact, we liked the idea so much that we have now added pdfs as part of our courses.
  • We have been in business since 1987 and are leaders in our market of training for manufacturing organizations.  Web-based training comprises over 50% of our business and EspritLMS is at the crux of our web-based training.  We WILL be in business next year and for years after that.  In addition, we MUST maintain and upgrade our LMS...our end users (mostly Fortune 1000 corporations) demand that.

Vickey and her learning community were extremely happy with EspritLMS.  Today, although Vickey has moved onto a different company, EspritLMS still powers Learning Management for FieldCentrix.
